History: 1980 – CONTAC

The academic internship program CONTAC, funded by a grant from Aetna Insurance Company, provided on-the-job experiences for local high school students in diverse fields as law, banking, computer science, physical medicine, and journalism. Sponsored by the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier, the Caddo Parish School Board, and other various volunteer sponsors from the business world. Through the CONTAC program, students could earn half of a high school credit in their field of interest through hands-on experience. In the program, students handled phone calls, did research, attended meetings, and wrote and read reports. These tasks, alongside working with sponsors who provide feedback to students on their strengths and weaknesses, help students gain a deeper understanding of their desired career path. The program even resulted in some students securing jobs after completing the program, although that was not its ultimate goal.
