How To Join

The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier actively seeks women who have an interest in voluntarism, a commitment to community service, and an interest in developing their potential. There are many benefits to membership in the Junior League. The League offers its members professional training, flexible volunteer placements, and an opportunity to make not only professional connections but lifelong friends as well. The Junior League welcomes all women who value our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations, and communities.

Membership

Membership in the JLSB is open to women age 24 and older who express an interest in voluntarism. There are three membership statuses: Provisional, Active, and Sustainer. During your first year in the Junior League, you are a Provisional member. Provisionals are required to meet regularly for a course that helps them learn how the JLSB operates, its history, and the responsibilities of membership. Non-mandatory social events take place often, giving you even more opportunities to get to know your fellow Provisionals!

Provisional Member Requirements

Provisional members are new members who are in the process of completing admission requirements for active membership.  As such, you shall be committed to completing the provisional course within the following year after your acceptance of provisional membership.

This course is designed to provide opportunities to learn more about the community, train for volunteering and learn about the responsibilities that come with League membership. If you are unable to complete the provisional course for unavoidable reasons, the Management Team may grant one extension of 12 months.  While completing the provisional course, provisional members attend General Membership Meetings but are not eligible to vote or hold office.  The provisional year is from August until the following May.

Informational meetings are held in the spring to allow interested women to learn about the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.  The meetings are held at the League Office located at 2601 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71104.  A complete list of the provisional course requirements is made available at this meeting.

The application period typically runs from the end of April to the end of July.

Active Member Requirements

Active members agree to engage in community service in connection with programs chosen by the League. Actives complete a “placement” each year, selecting a volunteer opportunity to serve the Shreveport-Bossier community or choosing to serve within the JLSB administration. Details about our current community placements can be found here. Members dedicate a minimum of 40 hours over the course of the year to volunteering in their chosen activity. Active members must also attend five (5) General Membership meetings and complete eight (8) hours of fund development shifts. After meeting certain membership requirements detailed in the JLSB bylaws, members may choose to become “sustaining” members, that is, take a supportive but less active role in the League. Sustainers may choose to return to Active status at any time.

Active members’ financial commitments are:

  • Annual membership dues of $120
  • Fund Development Financial Commitment: $120

Sustaining Member Requirements

Sustainers pay annual dues of $75 to $95 and are welcome to attend all General Membership meetings, training, and fundraising shifts as they wish. They serve as mentors to the Provisional and Active members and are a valuable source of support and inspiration to the League. Many of our Sustainers go on to serve as leaders in the community and in other charitable organizations in Shreveport-Bossier.
