Training Sets Us Apart
Training is central to the Junior League experience. It is educational in focus and aimed at improving our volunteer efforts. In fact, our mission statement focuses on “promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.”
Each member’s training starts with her Provisional course and, for many, continues within her placement programs during her years as an Active member. In addition to the routine training received in their placements, members take advantage of additional training opportunities.
These scheduled training opportunities take place every year and aim to provide additional tools for our members to become effective volunteers and to develop as community and civic leaders. Topics vary from year to year and have included sessions such as “Keeping your Family Safe,” “Financial Literacy,” and women’s health issues like cardiac health and breast cancer awareness.
Regional Leadership Training
Every year, the JLSB offers a premiere leadership training opportunity for all of our League members and members of Leagues throughout our region. This program was designed by the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier to further train members to be civic leaders within the community and serve the League as well as other organizations in leadership positions. Participants complete a one-day, expert-led training program that includes different sessions. Sessions vary yearly and have included topics on nonprofit financials, legal issues, strategic planning, public relations, and fundraising. The program aims to train members to further their League experience and promote camaraderie among the Leagues within our area. Depending on the topic and availability, the training is sometimes open to local nonprofit organizations and students.
